2009 Ford Flex Tow Hitch Install
2009 Ford Flex Tow Hitch Install
I really wanted to buy a Flex with the factory tow package, but there were none in the area so I decided I would just install an aftermarket hitch. There are a number of aftermarket options but the best looking is the Curt hitch #13547 (I believe it has been superseded by part #13551 which has a 5,000 lbs. rating). It is rated for 4,000 lbs. and most importantly it doesn’t hang way down under the exhaust like other aftermarket hitches from HiddenHitch, Reese, Draw-Tite, etc. I ordered the hitch and trailer wiring kit from etrailer.com for $152 out the door. See below for a complete install summary and pictures.
8/2010 Update: The Curt hitch makes an annoying squeaking noise whenever I tow with my Flex. Because of this, and the lower tow rating of the 13547 I am considering installing the aftermarket Ford factory hitch. It requires minor trimming of the rear bumper but it looks cleaner and it won’t squeak. Stay tuned.
9/2010: I ended up installed the newer Curt 13551 hitch because it was free (long story). The new hitch hangs way down in the back and I had to modify my trailer wiring location for it to fit. I will probably end up buying the Ford hitch at some point but for a temporary solution the new Curt is working fine. See pictures at end for this install.
